Habitat for Humanity Needs Assessment.

For this project, I utilized Kaufman's OEM needs assessment framework and collaborated with the Volunteer Manager, Marketing Manager, and Chief Development Officer of Habitat for Humanity Oakland County to address the question, "How can we enhance the volunteer experience?" On this page, I will outline my process for finding the answer to our question.

Project Contract

To start this project, I reached out to the Marketing Manager to set up a quick call and discuss the store's needs. After identifying the needs, I formed a Needs Assessment Committee (NAC) that I will be in regular contact with throughout the project. I also created a project contract outlining my client, objectives, boundaries, timeline, and the members of my NAC.

Data Collection

After finishing my project contract, I met with my NAC to explain what a Needs Assessment is and the role we will be playing in helping Habitat for Humanity address the question, "How can we improve the volunteer experience." During our discussion, we developed some data collection tools to gain a better understanding of what the volunteers would like to see more of, and what the managers understand about their role in relation to the volunteers.

Final Report

After determining the correct data collection methods, I conducted interviews with managers and volunteers, and observed volunteer sessions to identify the gap between the expected and actual activities. The data collection tools revealed that managers were not trained on how to greet or assign tasks to volunteers, volunteers were assigned to clean bathrooms, and volunteers felt that their volunteer day was wasted because managers took 30-45 minutes to greet them and give tasks. After gathering this information, I prepared a report for my NAC detailing all my findings and recommendations to train Habitat for Humanity managers on welcoming volunteers and assigning appropriate tasks, as well as a final presentation to share these insights.

Due to my thorough needs assessment and analysis, Habitat for Humanity has invited me to return to construct and implement their training program.
